EUB ISU History
The Eastern-Ukrainian Branch of International Solomon university (EUB ISU) was opened in Kharkov in 1998 and is a structural subdivision of International Solomon university – one of Ukraine’s oldest non-budget (not state-financed) higher educational establishments founded in 1992 in Kiev. EUB ISU, permanently headed by professor B.S. Elkin (PhD), tops the list of the best private institutions of higher learning in Ukraine.
During the nine years of its existence the EUB ISU has developed into one of the most prestigious educational establishments in the city of Kharkov with a total output of over 500 graduates – economists, historians and programmers.
The EUB ISU has hosted:
- seven international summer schools on Jewish Studies for undergraduates and post-graduate students from the NIS countries and the Baltic states;
- seven summer schools on Jewish Studies for senior secondary school pupils;
- seven all-Ukrainian conferences on “Topical Issues of the History and Culture of the Peoples of Ukraine” for senior secondary school pupils;
- annual Readings (2000-2007) in memory of the outstanding Kharkov economist E. Lieberman for senior secondary school pupils;
- nine “Man and the World” Olympiad contests for senior secondary school pupils;
- a large-scale Olympiad contest for Kharkov senior secondary school pupils (2006);
- the “World Around Us” conference for secondary school pupils (2007);
- nine students’ academic conferences on “History. Computer Sciences. Economics”;
- five archaeologic excavation expeditions;
- “The Khazar State and Problems of Historical and Cultural Development of the Peoples of Eurasia” – an international symposium (2002) dedicated to the 100-th anniversary of the 12-th all-Russia congress on archaeology held in Kharkov to commemorate the discovery of the Saltov Khazar Kaganate culture;
- a Forum on Jewish Studies with participation of Jewish academic institutions leaders of the NIS countries and the Baltic states;
- “Eastern Europe and the Caucasus at the time of Ibn Fadland” – an International conference (2005) in honour of the 110-th of A.P. Kovalevsky’s birth anniversary.
Six “Khazar Almanac” collections, nine collections of students’ research theses, dozens of didactic and methodological materials collections have been published.
Since November 2000, the ISU “International Centre for Khazar Studies” research unit has been operational under the aegis of the ISU Eastern-Ukrainian branch. The Centre’s main tasks consist in organizing and implementing fundamental and applied research in the field of Khazar Studies.
Since August 2004, the “Solomon Education” scientific-methological complex, created at the EUB ISU initiative, has been functioning. The complex is a joint venture of ISU and #9 Kharkov Technological Lyceum, its aim being providing a continuous non-stop education to learners from their starting primary school to their completion of Master’s university degrees. In 2007 the Complex merged with the Laboratory of Informational Technologies, created with the support of the international organization World-ORT.
In 2006 the EUB ISU Alumni Association was founded.
